This is what i feel for EIR. I feel that it is fun when i’m doing all the activities in class. It’s so sad that it’s ending ): . Now i shall start on my final blog reflection on my tumblr.
For me EIR, is really useful in terms of helping me research on a certain topic. Some of the things that i had learnt throughout EIR is that i have learn to use different search facilities to research for a specific topic. Search facilities like Meta- search engine, invisible web and subject directory. Before EIR started i NEVER KNEW these things existed on the web and the only two search facilities that i had been using was yahoo and google. Other than that i also learned how to evaluate a website by using the 7 criterias which are purpose, usability, coverage , authority , accessibility, currency, presentation and arrangement and accuracy. From using this criteria i can know if the information that i have gotten the correct information from the internet.
Lastly, i would like to dedicate this last paragraph to Miss Faridah. Miss Faridah you are one of the best teachers i have met you are fun , easy-going and helpful to me. Thank you for helping me throughout the EIR classes especially when i had a lot of questions to ask, you still helped me although some of the questions i repeat(i’m a bit blur at times sorry :D). For me the significance of working in a group is that there are more brains working together. With more brains working together, we can generate more ideas. Also, it helps me to get to know my friends better from this group activity. I find it more fun compared to individual activities :D. As an individual contributor i have gained the experience of sharing my ideas with my group members and see how they thought about my opinion on the given issue.
The most challenging experience that i had was to try not to have the same opinion with one of my group members. One of my group members had about the same idea, so i tried hard to look at the issue from a different angle, unfortunately i failed to do so, so i submitted my original idea.
My advice to the next wiki batch as they start the start the similar project is that they do brainstorming of ideas and make sure everyone has a different idea and then they can start to do research individually after the brainstorming.
I would use Wiki for research in my own diploma course as it has a lot of information of different topics and from there i can search for my research topic and apply it for my diploma course if i have assignments or projects to do. That’s all for now bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb :D!
My dream holiday destination is London. To find out more about i visited the website called www.visitlondon.com. I used the criteria of purpose to evaluate the website that i had mentioned earlier. I clicked on the about us section on the website and got to know the purpose of the website which was to promote London as the world’s most exciting city by marketing to domestic and overseas leisure and business visitors , as well as Londoners themselves. In my opinion, the aim itself is already good enough for me and i am very excited by the fact that they have attractions that i really want to go to.
The reasons why i chose to go to London is because i am very interested by their fashion trend and i am very sure by going there are a few other clothing shops that are similar to topman and of course i would love to visit those shops and buy some clothings from there. The second reasons is becausei am a DIE HARD MANCHESTER UNITED FAN. Therfore, i would like to go to old Trafford and visit their gifts shops but more importantly i WOULD LOVE TO WATCH A LIVE MANCHESTER UNITED GAME IN OLD TRAFFORD! The last reason is because i want to go for sight-seeing. One place i would love to see is the London’s Tower Bridge. I shall end my post here and bye bye :D!
The advantage of using twitter is that it is a micro-blog, meaning that there is limited number of words that can be posted whereas, for blogspot the number of words is unlimited and we can write to our heart’s content. If i were to use twitter to search for information on EIR, i think that twitter is more user-friendly as it will only show posts of a summarized information on EIR while blog may have a whole list information and maybe even some useless information as the posts may be very long.
First of all, we can use twitter for research engine by using the twitter search engine and it will show the ‘tweets’ from different people’s account providing summarized information based on the what we are searching for.(Note that we can only view tweets of non-private users and if we want to view tweets of private users we have to follow them on twitter.)Secondly, we can use blogspot for research purpose by searching for blogs from any search engines that are available. It will then give a few results and we can choose which one we want to read. The information given is usually longer compared to the ‘tweets’. That’s all for my post today, bb :D!
For today’s activity we evaluated www.stomp.com. The criterias that i used were currency, usability and purpose. Stomp fits their criteria of being current as it updates with latest news everyday and in one day itself more than one news would be updated on the website. In addition, it also fits the criteria of usability as it is user-friendly for users. To make things even better they have stomp applications for iphone users where users can use the application to read current updates and also post things on stomp on the go. Lastly, it fits the criteria of purpose. The purpose of stomp is to connect, interact and engage with Singaporeans in a way that is different from conventional news website.
From this lesson i have learnt what citizen journalism is. To me citizen journalism is a news report that is informal , which also allows the audience to comment about the report and also to share the news report. As we know from stomp we can rate the report as ‘Bochup’, ‘LOL’ , ‘Shiok’ and etc. This makes it informal. Also, in stomp users are able to comment on the news and post their opinions on stomp. Lastly, audience can also share the news post on facebook, windows live and also twitter.
If i were to create a website that is similar to stomp for my research topic, the leisure trends among youth, my target would obviously be youths rather than the public as youths should know what they themselves are doing these days for their leisure time. Also, i would make sure that the contents are not biased to a specific cultural group. In this way, i would be able to reach out to all the youths in Singapore more easily. First of all, invisible web are text pages, files or information that are of high quality authority from the world wide web that cannot be found in general-purpose search engine or are not added to the indices of their web pages.
In my opinion, both the invisible web and the search engines, meta search and subject directories have their own advantages. I will compare both of them by evaluating their advantages and also my search results. First of all , the good thing about the search engine, meta search and subject directories is that it is able to search for things which are more generalized and the results that i get is a lot compared to the invisible web. However, for the invisible web i will get only factual results but when i used it i did not get any results. Therefore, if i were to compare between both the invisible web and search engines, meta search and subject directories i would say that the search engines are more effective, because it gives me many results to choose from.
I would want to use the invisible web to do research in my diploma course as i can get factual information and i do not have to go through the trouble to check if it is factual. From my wiki experience i learn that Wiki is user-friendly as we can share information on a page. Furthermore, when we log in as a Wiki user we can edit the information anytime we want.
I will comment on ginger’s blog. I find ginger’s blog very informative on whatever she did in Eir as her reflections are easy to understand, furthermore she posted the questions that we are supposed to answer for the blog reflections making it easy to know what she responded to.
From using the different search facilities to search for my search topic, i get a lot more results and many variations of sources that are related. Other than, that it also helps me understand and also use the different search facilities to search for my search topic because before attending for eir classes the only two search facilities that i know how to use and use to search anything on the web isyahoo and google. Now, i further understand the other features of the other search engine more.
I’m using tumblr therefore i am not able to have site feeds on my tumblr. However, looking at my classmates doing it, i feel that site feeds are effective as they are time savers. A person does not need to type in the other person’s blog link just to get to their blogs. Instead, they can just press the site feed to get to their blogs easily. It is extremely beneficial for lazy people like me. :D
What i like about collaborating on Wiki with other students who share the similar research topic as me is that we are able to somehow get an idea on what the others are doing for their research. Also, i did not really know what to extract from my research thus, by looking at the collaboration on Wiki i got the idea on what to share on Wiki. Furthermore, i can also check if my research is quite relevant to my topic by ‘checking’ with the information shared by the others.
First of all, google is not a new thing to me as i use it every single day to search for my own stuffs. However, i’ve never really played around or experimented with some of its functions or features. I have to say i am impressed by some of its unique features like for one the wonderwheel. The wonderwheel helps users to link from a certain keyword to another keyword and it that way it helps users to widen their search topic or anything that they are searching for. Other than that i am also impressed by the timeline feature. I DID NOT KNOW IT EXISTED UNTIL NOW. Well, basically the timeline feature is something that we can use to search articles from the past and current. This would be helpful for people who are searching for sources or articles from the past and the present.
Secondly, i am not able to participate in the discussion forum that i had found from practical 1. I have a problem with singing up to it and participating in the forum, however, i will still comment on how helpful it is. I would say that it is helpful as it helped me to somehow figure out what is relevant to the current leisure trends among youths nowadays. If i were to participate in that forum i feel that i would be anxious as i’m afraid that my response would not be good enough or even relevant to the other users.
Lastly, citations and bibliography as it prevents plagiarism. By doing citations and bibliography we show where we got some of our contents from and it shows that we are giving credit to that someone who had shared the information with us. What i like about the virtual experience is that i was able to make friends with people from abroad easily, it’s something that i would not be able to do unless that person were to be in singapore.In this activity i was able to make friends with a guy from hong kong named jianheng wu who is currently taking the e-commerce course in a hong kong poly-u. In second life his avatar name is matchless spot. Although he was from hong kong it was easy for me to communicate with him as i do not need to observe special mannerisms,behaviours or ethics. This is probably because everyone in the virtual experience everyone are treated as ‘normal citizens’ in second life and therefore everyone are ‘equal’. From this e-learning experience i have learned second life is a source is a social network where we are able to gather useful informations from people abroad and not only that it helps to broaden our social network by helping us making friends from overseas. For me the most challenging experience in the second life was to find a user from hong kong. It took me like 10 minutes to just find one. Other than that i also had trouble moving around as the programme is a bit laggy. That’s all for my post today, till next time . bb :D
The topic that was posted on the facebook discussion forum was “We can never get enough of Internet. Do you agree? Why? How would you want Internet to serve you in the future?” and my response was ‘Yes, i do agree that we can never get enough of Internet. This is because there are many new things on the internet and there are endless amount of entertainment on the internet, for example the Internet have many movies and we can entertain ourselves by watching all the movies. Other than that there are also gaming sites and there are like many games available on the internet. In the future i would want the internet to serve me for entertainment and also to expand my knowledge .’ In my opinion, i am able to express my views freely on facebook because there is no restriction to the contents that we want to post on facebook.
For me this online discussion experience is better compared to the traditional face to face class discussions as it is easier to get the message in words rather than hearing it. Other than that we do not have to go up to the person or gather in groups just to have face to face discussions, we can just sit and use our computer to start our discussions. Therefore, i think it is more convenient to use to do discussions compared to have traditional face to face discussions.
For me this online activity is meaningful as it is the first time that i had done such an activity and furthermore i discovered a few benefits of online discussions after doing this online activity. Alright that’s all for now. BB :DDDDD
